Elimination of Countermeasure Tariffs on U.S Steel and Aluminum and US Origin Goods

The Department of Finance issued a notice announcing that Canada has eliminated the countermeasure against the US steel and aluminum as well other US goods that were subject to the 25% and 10% surtax on imports.

On Friday, May 17, the U.S. announced that it would eliminate tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum within two days. Canada also agreed to eliminate its countermeasures against the U.S.

Effective of May 19, 2019 12.01.a.m importers will no longer be required to pay surtax pursuant to the U.S. Surtax orders that was in place since July 1, 2018

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued Customs Notice 19-09 on May 19, 2019 Repeal of the U.S. Surtax Order (Steel and Aluminum) and U.S. Surtax Order (other goods).

The United States Surtax Order (Steel and Aluminum): SOR/2018-152 and the United States Surtax Order (Other Goods): SOR/2018-153 imposing surtax on certain products originating in the United States are repealed.
