Notice of intent to amend Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations with the U.S.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), in April of 2022, announced its intent to increase the stringency of existing energy efficiency standards and update the testing standards for refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers and clothes dryers, aligning these requirements with the rule making activities currently underway in the U.S. by the Department of Energy. The expected effective date was 2024.

On August 11, 2023, NRCan gave notice that the effective date will no longer be in 2024, but rather, will align with the United States’ anticipated effective date of 2027.

Consultations will continue with provinces, territories, and other stakeholders to discuss the approach outlined in the notice of intent.
