Update on Tariff Reduction on Information Technology Products effective July 1, 2016

Further to the notification on the WTO Tariff Rate Reductions published earlier, the first round of tariff reductions is set for 1 July 2016.

The Information Technology Agreement (ITA) tariff rate reductions  will be in a phased out in stages starting July 1, 2016 through to July 1, 2018 for certain goods falling in Chapter 35, 37, 39, 84, 85, 88, and 90. The Order in Council (OIC) 2016-624 will implement the tariff reductions for the Information Technology Agreement (ITA).

The Department of Finance has advised the Amendments to the list of Tariff Provisions Schedule Part 1 and Part 2 was registered on June 22, 2016 as SOR/2016-197 and will be published in the Canada Gazette, Part II on July 13, 2016. The Order is effective July 1, 2016.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA has issued Customs Notice 16-16 Amendment to the Departmental Consolidation of the Customs Tariff T2016-3 advising of the ITA rates of duty changes. Also, the rate of duty reductions included in the Canada-EFTA Free Trade Agreement  are effective July 1, 2016 for  Iceland (IT), Norway (NT) and Switzerland-Liechtenstein (SLT) tariff treatments for certain goods classified in Chapter 89 Ships, Boats and other Structures..
