Looking ahead: customs and trade trends in 2014

At the beginning of each year, Livingston likes to take a look ahead at the trends and issues that could potentially affect importers and exporters in the coming months. 2014 looks to be another interesting year, with many ongoing modernization initiatives, trade programs and international agreements being further defined and/or coming into effect.

Compliance and trade security

Balancing growth, compliance and security continues to be a challenge for companies involved in international trade. Global sourcing and emerging markets are ideal for companies looking to grow, but managing new regulations and requirements, and finding new – and secure – supply chain partners internationally requires time, effort and due diligence.

International trade agreements on the way

New international trade agreements between Canada and the EU, and the U.S. and the EU, may potentially open up new opportunities and help importers and exporters realize cost savings. But these agreements are in the early stages and their impact remains to be seen.
