On April 14, 2026, the Government of Canada announced their intention to introduce legislative amendments to the Excise Tax Act to temporarily suspend the application of the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline, diesel fuel, and aviation fuels.
The measure is in effect from April 20, 2026, up to and including Labour Day on Monday, September 7, 2026.
By temporarily suspending this tax, the price of gasoline and unleaded aviation gasoline should fall by 10 cents per litre, and the price of diesel fuel and aviation fuel can be expected to decrease by 4 cents per litre.
It is estimated that this will provide over $2.4 billion in total tax relief for Canadians.
