Environment Canada seeking input on mercury export amendments

Environment Canada is consulting on proposed amendments to the Export of Substances on the Export Control List Regulations and the Export Control List.

The proposed amendments would enable Canada to prohibit exports of elemental mercury with certain exemptions. They would also improve the general flexibility for compliance under the regulations by providing a mechanism to allow notified exports to be shipped in less than 30 days, as currently required.

The consultation intends to collect comments on the proposed amendments, as well as information to assist Environment Canada in estimating costs to businesses of completing administrative activities linked to the proposed amendments.

A consultation document on the proposed amendments to the Export of Substances on the Export Control List Regulations and Export Control List prohibiting the export of mercury is available online on Environment Canada website. A consultation survey questionnaire is also available.

Anyone wishing to self-identify as a small business, a mercury exporter or a mercury importer may also submit this information along with their comments.

Please submit your comments by June 24, 2015 to the Director of the Chemical Production Division or fax to 819-938-4218.
