Government of Canada unveils robust countermeasures and support package in response to United States tariffs

Ottawa, Canada – In a decisive move to protect Canada’s economy and workforce, the Government of Canada announced a comprehensive package of targeted countermeasures against United States (U.S.) goods and substantial support for workers and businesses following the United States’ decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods. The new Canadian tariffs will come into effect on September 8th, 2026.

Minister Champagne confirmed that Canada will implement “dollar-for-dollar, rate-for-rate” additional tariffs on U.S. goods, directly matching the U.S. rates of 15, 25, and 50 percent. These retaliatory tariffs will apply to $27.6 billion in imports from the United States, focusing on key sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, and agricultural products.

The Canadian government stated that this focused response aims to safeguard Canadian workers, farmers, fishers, families, and businesses, while defending industries harmed by the “unjustified U.S. tariffs.”

Beyond the retaliatory tariffs, Ottawa is introducing a substantial $7.5 billion package of new and enhanced support for those affected by the trade dispute.
