On January 26, 2026, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued Customs Notice 26-02, containing administrative guidelines for the application of the Surtax on Imports of Certain Steel Goods Remission Order, 2025.
The remission order is intended to minimize the unintended effects of the surtax on Canadian companies and entities and contains 2 parts as follows:
- Remission is granted of surtax paid or payable under the Order Imposing a Surtax on the Importation of Certain Steel Goods, on goods that were in-transit to Canada on or before August 1, 2025.
- Remission is granted of surtax paid or payable under the Order Imposing a Surtax on the Importation of Certain Steel Goods on goods that are listed in the Schedule of the Surtax on Imports of Certain Steel Goods Remission Order, 2025, that were imported on or after June 27, 2025.
