Transport Canada Approves Fee Increase for Registrar of Imported Vehicles Program

On December 14, 2016, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued CN 16-30 to advise vehicle importers of an increase in fees for the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) Program.  This is the first increase in RIV Program fees since 2005.

The company contracted to deliver the RIV Program on behalf of Transport Canada (TC) has advised TC that due to decreased levels of vehicle importations and the evolving requirements of the program, they can no longer provide the service to TC within the current price structure.

Following consultations and negotiations with the contractor, TC has approved the following increases in import fees to take effect January 1, 2017.

The fee for vehicles entering through any border crossing, other than Quebec, using the RIV Program with a Vehicle Import Form (Form 1), increases from $195 + GST/HST to $295 + GST/HST.

For vehicles entering through border crossings in Quebec using the RIV Program with a Form 1, the fee increases from $195 + GST and QST to $295 + GST and QST.

The fee for vehicles entering the RIV Program with a Vehicle Imported for Parts Form (parts only vehicles), increases from $60 + GST/HST to $90 + GST/HST for vehicles entering through any border crossing other than Quebec, and from $60 + GST and QST to $90 + GST and QST, for vehicles entering through border crossings in Quebec.
The entire Customs Notice is available on CBSA’s website.

Additional information on importing vehicles is available on line through the RIV program website.
