Canada began monitoring imports of certain aluminum products in September of 2019. The Aluminum Import Monitoring Program is administered by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) through General Import Permit 83 (GIP83), which facilitates the collection of aluminum import data.
The proposed amendments to GIP 83 would change various provisions to require that importers provide country of smelt and cast (CSC) information to the CBSA at the time of importation, as a term and condition of using the GIP.
On April 4, 2026, GAC launched a public consultation to obtain stakeholders’ views on the proposed amendment to GIP83. Interested parties are encouraged to review the Gazette Publication and provide feedback by using the online commenting feature. The consultations will be open until May 4, 2026.
