Nutrition labelling changes enforced beginning December 15, 2023

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has published a notice to industry to remind regulated parties that the flexibility given to industry after the end of the transition period for the 2016 nutrition labelling amendments ends on December 14, 2023.

CFIA inspection activities will be monitoring compliance with the new labelling requirements for prepackaged products imported, manufactured in Canada or packaged at retail after that date.

Improvements were made to the nutrition facts table and list of ingredients on food labels to make them easier to understand thereby helping the people living in Canada to make informed choices.

The key changes being made are to the:

  • Nutrition facts table
  • Serving size
  • Information on sugars
  • Information on sweeteners
  • List of ingredients
  • Front of package nutrition labelling

Additional information on the changes are available in Health Canada’s Food labelling changes.
