The Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced that again this fall, they will be implementing temporary import conditions for romaine lettuce imported from the United States.
The temporary measure is intended to mitigate the higher risk of E. coli O157 contamination of romaine lettuce grown in certain California counties during the fall months.
From September 24, 2026, to December 17, 2026, the CFIA will require that importers of romaine lettuce and/or salad mixes containing romaine lettuce must obtain and retain a Proof of Origin demonstrating that the product does not originate from the California counties of Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey in the Salinas Valley, United States.
Importers of romaine lettuce and/or salad mixes containing romaine lettuce from these counties, or importers who cannot obtain a valid Proof of Origin, must demonstrate compliance, meeting one of the following requirements:
Option 1 – Evidence of participation in the LGMA Romaine Test & Learn Program (new for the 2026 harvest season)
Option 2 – Certificate of analysis (unchanged from the 2025 requirements)
