CFIA revises import policy for pet food and treats

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has extensively revised the import policy for pet food and treats containing animal products and by-products. This policy completely replaces any other versions.

The CFIA does not regulate pet food production in Canada for domestic sale; however, the importation of pet foods and related products containing ingredients of animal origin are subject to the relevant sections of the Health of Animals Act and Regulations in order to prevent animal diseases from being introduced to Canada. The Policy contains information on various pet foods and includes provisions for the issuance of zoo sanitary export certification, import permit documentation requirements. The origin of the exporting country must be recognized as free of disease.
