Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued Customs Notice CN18-18 advising of upcoming changes to the Energy Efficiency Regulations administered by Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) on the import reporting requirements. Customs Notice also advises of the potential HS codes for energy-using products that will be removed for import-reporting requirements.
Amendment 14 to the Energy Efficiency Regulations pre-published in March 2018 in the Canada Gazette Part 1, updates existing energy efficiency standards for 17 product categories to align with requirements in force or soon to be in force in the U.S.
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) proposed, as part of Amendment 14 to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations (the Regulations), to remove import reporting for external power supplies (EPS), electric motors (motors) and fluorescent lamp ballasts (ballasts) when they are imported as components of another product.
However, important to note is when an external power supply, electric motor or fluorescent lamp ballast is imported as a stand-alone product, the import-reporting requirement continues to apply.
Amendment 14 proposes to introduce energy efficiency requirements for two new products: battery chargers and small motors. This exception will also apply to these two products when they are imported as components of another product.
