Aluminum will fall 20%, thousands of companies and the National Aluminum Chamber (CANALUM) close more for export

Like other branches of the industry, aluminum is not in its best cycle since 2018, given the uncertainty. Last year it barely maintained its production level, and this 2020 is estimated to end with a 20 percent drop.

For a business that until last year had a market value of 15,000 million dollars and that 95% is made up of micro-SMEs, you can imagine that with the current crisis, thousands of small companies will finally close.

The National Aluminum Chamber (CANALUM), which has inaugurated its president in the person of Francisco Beltrán since August 14, will wait for the official information to know the exact damage of this situation.

Beltrán, boss of Aluminio Extral, which operates in Querétaro and CDMX, is an old connoisseur of this business in which he has remained for 47 years.

In addition to the collapse, aluminum also had to endure confinement, since the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador classified it as non-essential. Many no longer opened. This input is increasingly in our lives. An annual per capita in Mexico is calculated to be 12 kg since it is in medicines, containers, computers, household items, cars, etc. 64% of the demand for aluminum is generated in equal parts by construction and automotive.

CANALUM is the newest camera in the country at only three years old. It started with 20 members and already has 34. A goal of Beltrán is to reach 150 by March 2021, since this group is oriented to support the union.

They seek to promote the ISO certification of its members, since the process is very expensive. Our country is also a good aluminum exporter with 600,000 tons per year. Not only via the automotive sector, but also windows or stairs are sold with high standards. The T-MEC, it is judged, is a great opportunity, as are Donald Trump’s restrictions on China. Justo CANALUM intends to push more in this area, with the idea of diversifying trade towards Canada or LA.
