Phase 2 of the new organic import requirements coming May 26, 2025

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has sent out a reminder regarding the new organic certificate requirement, scheduled for May 2025.

Phase 1, implemented in November 2024, required importers to declare whether they have a copy of the organic products certificate in their possession, no physical copy was required.

Phase 2 will begin May 26, 2025, at which time importers/brokers will be required to provide a digital copy (image) of the organic certificate(s) as part of their Integrated Import Declaration (IID) also referred to as the CBSA Single Window. The CBSA will assign a Unique Reference Number (URN) for each uploaded certificate which can be used in lieu of a digital copy for all subsequent imports of goods covered by the certificate.

CFIA has advised that, once in effect, failure to upload a copy of the organic product certificate or a URN will result in a shipment rejection until the organic product certificate digital copy or URN is provided.
