APHIS Posts New Webpage on Importing Wooden Handicrafts from China

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) has posted a new Web page providing guidance and resources for businesses and individuals importing wooden handicrafts from China.

APHIS published a final rule in 2012, defining the requirements for importing wooden handicrafts from China.  This rule went into effect April 30, 2012.  Since then, APHIS has received numerous inquiries about the import requirements for wooden handicrafts from China.  Subsequently, this new webpage has been created.

The APHIS webpage addresses frequently asked questions (FAQ) and topics, including:

  • How to meet APHIS’ regulatory requirements
  • Types of wood products that APHIS considers a handicraft
  • The list of approved manufacturers of wooden handicrafts from China
  • The criteria manufacturers must meet to be added to the approved manufacturer list
  • Links to programs related to the import of wood and wood products
  • APHIS points of contact for wooden handicraft issues
