Changes coming to Energy Efficient Product standards

On April 30, 2016, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) initiated the development of Amendment 14 to the Energy Efficiency Regulations. This Amendment will introduce or update energy efficiency standards and, where applicable, test methods and associated reporting and compliance requirements for 15 product categories. Also, the amendment to the regulations will align with United States standards.
NRCan has posted technical bulletins on its website to outline the regulatory changes being considered for these product categories in order to solicit stakeholder views.

The following new products have been added to the list include:

  • Microwave ovens (Residential)
  • Refrigeration, remote (Commercial and industrial)
  • Walk-in coolers/freezers (Commercial and industrial)
  • Small electric motors (Commercial and industrial)
  • Pre-rinse spray valves (Commercial and industrial)
  • Metal halide lamp ballasts (Lighting)

NRCan is requesting stakeholders to submit written comments on these technical bulletins by June 30, 2016, to inform analysis of any potential changes.

Several webinars on various products will be held in the coming weeks to present the details of each technical bulletin and to hear the views of stakeholders.  NRCAN encourages interested parties to register for these webinars that are being held in June 2016. Webinar details can be found here.

Stakeholder input and feedback will inform the development of a formal regulatory proposal in early 2017.
